The Sandbox: At Play with the Photobook

for Carnegie Museum of Art

I worked with Melissa Catanese and Ed Panar of Spaces Corners to create this hybrid space for encounters with the photobook as part of the Hillman Photography Initiative. Located in the coatroom of the Carnegie Museum of Art, The Sandbox was part reading room, part bookshop, part library and part event space. And it hosted A People’s History of Pittsburgh, an online project inviting visitors to share images from Pittsburgh’s past (that were then projected onto the wall). I also designed gallery guides for each of the six Sandbox themes and a title wall that was easily updated. Woodwork by Nathan Gearhart.
