Luke Swank: Modernist Photographer

for Carnegie Museum of Art

Luke Swank was a pioneer of Modernist photography but he was largely forgotten after his death. This exhibition, curated by Howard Bossen and Linda Batis, established Swank’s place in the history of photography. Because the work consisted mainly of small, mounted photos, I tried to create intimate spaces in the large, high-ceilinged galleries. Swank’s Steel Plant photo-mural, which he first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1932, was re-created at its original size.
